Vowels made of two vowels

Nothing new to memorise

The vowels that are left are not new letters at all: each one is two vowels you already write, drawn side by side in one space. ㅐ is the a-vowel followed by the i-vowel; ㅘ is the o-vowel followed by the a-vowel. Read them in that order and the sound is usually what you would guess.

Both are an upright vowel with the plain upright line added after it. The tick decides which one you are looking at.

A flat vowel first, then an upright one. Two vowels, one space, and the order is the order you say them in.

The lying vowel first, then a plain upright line. That line carries no short stroke of its own, so each of these is a stroke shorter than the pair before.

In a block, the two halves keep their own habits: the flat half goes under the consonant and the upright half stands to the right of both. So a block with one of these vowels fills all three corners at once, and it is still one square and one syllable.
