Frequently asked questions

Everything people ask before and after they start, in one place.

Getting started

What is LinguaPair?
A language-learning app for two people who learn together – couples first, but any pair. It combines authored courses from A0 to C2 in six languages, a live translator for real conversations, a spaced-repetition vocabulary trainer, partner games, films and reading with audio.
Do I need a partner to use it?
No. Every part of the app works alone: courses, the level test, vocabulary, reading, the translator and, against Robo, the games. Invite your partner whenever you like.
Which devices does it run on?
iPhone, Android and the web at linguap.com. One account; the same progress everywhere.
How do I start?
Create an account with email, Google or Apple, pick the language you want to learn and the language of the app, take the level test if you already know some of the language, and do the first lesson. It takes about three minutes.

Pairing

How do we link our accounts?
One of you shares an invite – a code, a QR code, a link or an email – and the other accepts it. The pair is linked in seconds and can be unlinked at any time.
Do we have to learn the same language?
No. Each partner picks their own language or two; the translator works in both directions. Many pairs learn each other’s language.
Do we have to speak the same language?
No. The live translator exists precisely so that you do not have to: you speak your language, your partner hears theirs.
What if my partner is far away?
The translator has a remote mode – a chat where each of you writes or speaks in your own language – and the games and streaks work across any distance.

Languages and courses

Which languages can I learn?
English, Russian, Spanish, Vietnamese, Japanese and Korean. Each is also available as the language of the app, so any combination works.
How big is a course?
Every language has a full ladder from A0 to C2: around fifty units and more than three hundred lessons, with lectures, exercises, reading passages and reviews. A0 teaches the writing system; A1 starts speaking.
Are the lessons written by people or generated?
Written. Every lesson is authored and reviewed against one common curriculum and checked for consistency across the six languages. Illustrations and voice-overs are produced with generative tools and reviewed.
Do I have to start from the beginning?
No. The placement test (A1 to C2) puts you on the right lesson; complete beginners start at A0 with the alphabet.
Can I learn two languages at once?
Yes, up to two learning languages per account, each with its own course and vocabulary.

The translator and vocabulary

How does the live translator work?
You speak, the app writes down what you said, translates it and reads it out in your partner’s language – on one phone held between you or on two phones apart. The words you needed are picked out afterwards and offered to your vocabulary trainer.
How does the vocabulary trainer schedule reviews?
With spaced repetition, the SM-2 family of scheduling: a word you know well comes back in weeks, a word you keep missing comes back tomorrow. Each card carries an example sentence and audio.
Where do words come from?
From your translator conversations, from lessons, from reading and from films – one tap on a word adds it. You rarely type a card by hand.

Films and reading

How does learning with films work?
Pick a film or series, upload its subtitles, and the app builds a week of vocabulary from it – a few words a day, with the scenes they come from. Watch together, learn together.
What is the reading section?
Short texts at your level with a glossary and a voice-over. One text a week is free; Premium gets a new text every day.

Premium and payment

What is free?
The translator for ten minutes a day, the A0 and A1 levels of every course, up to a hundred words in the trainer, the level test, pairing, streaks and XP. No card required.
What does Premium add?
Unlimited translator, every level of every course including the bonus lessons, unlimited vocabulary, a new reading text every day, the whole film every week and the partner games.
Do both of us have to pay?
No. One Premium subscription covers both partners on every device, whichever of you buys it.

Account and privacy

Can I delete my account?
Yes, from the profile in the app or from the account settings on the site. Everything goes with it: the pair, the words, the conversations, the progress.
Who can see our translator conversations?
The two of you. They are used to pick out vocabulary for your own trainer and for nothing else.
How do I reach you?
support@linguap.com. We answer in all six languages.
