The whole family in one table
| Who | Masculine | Feminine |
|---|---|---|
| parents | أَبِي | أُمِّي |
| brothers and sisters | أَخِي | أُخْتِي |
| the father’s side | عَمِّي | عَمَّتِي |
| the mother’s side | خَالِي | خَالَتِي |
| grandparents | جَدِّي | جَدَّتِي |
| grandchildren | حَفِيدِي | حَفِيدَتِي |
Three things to keep in mind. ة turns into ت before a suffix: عَمَّتِي, زَوْجَتُهُ. أَب and أَخ stretch before suffixes other than “my”: أَبُوكَ, أَخُوهُ. And “uncle” always says the side: عَمّ for the father’s, خَال for the mother’s.
بِنْتُ عَمِّي طَوِيلَةٌ، وَعُيُونُهَا زَرْقَاءُ.My cousin (my father’s brother’s daughter) is tall, and her eyes are blue.
Describing someone: the adjective agrees with the person (هُوَ مَرِحٌ – هِيَ مَرِحَةٌ); hair and eyes go with a suffix (شَعْرُهُ, عُيُونُهَا); age is asked with كَمْ and answered with digits and سَنَةً.
كَمْ عُمْرُ جَدَّتِكَ؟ – عُمْرُهَا ٧٥ سَنَةً، وَشَعْرُهَا أَبْيَضُ.How old is your grandmother? – She is 75, and her hair is white.
