Numbers 0–100

Use cardinal numbers to count things: one, two, three. In this unit, remember the difference between -teen numbers and -ty numbers: thirteen = 13, thirty = 30. We also use numbers for ages, prices, and phone numbers.

I have fourteen books.

Telling the time

Ask What time is it? to talk about the time. Say o'clock for exact hours, half past for :30, quarter past for :15, and quarter to for :45. Use at before a time.

It is half past two.

ClockEnglish time
5:00five o'clock
2:30half past two
7:15quarter past seven
8:45quarter to nine

Use a.m. for times after midnight and before noon, and p.m. for times after noon and before midnight. For example, 8 a.m. is in the morning, and 8 p.m. is in the evening.

Days, months, and dates

Use days for weekly plans: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Use months for the year: January, February, March. For dates, we often use ordinal numbers: first, second, third, fourth.

My class is on Friday, in May.
