The first day at the office
Read the passage, then listen to it. Answer ten questions about what you read or heard. You can return to the passage while answering.
There are new people in our company today. A woman and a man are in the office. Two children, a boy and a girl, are with them.
“Hello. I'm Sara. Are you our new engineer?”
“Yes, I am. My name is Ken. This is my friend Maria.”
“Is Maria an engineer, too?”
“No. She's a doctor. She's here for a class about health at work.”
“Where are you from, Ken?”
“I'm from Brazil. My nationality is Brazilian. My city is São Paulo.”
“And Maria?”
“She's from Mexico. She's Mexican. Her language is Spanish.”
A form is on the desk: “Name. Country. Nationality. Job.” Each country and nationality starts with a capital letter. Ken writes his answers.
“Who is that man?” Ken asks.
“He's Paolo. He's Italian.”
“Is he a cook?”
“No, he isn't. He's a driver.”
“What do you do, Sara?”
“I'm a nurse. And the woman at the door is Yuki. She's Japanese. She's our teacher today.”
“Are the children students?”
“Yes, they are. Each child is a student at the school next door.”
“Are you and Paolo students, too?”
“No, we aren't.”
On the board: “Who? Where? What?” A short answer under each question. Then two more jobs: “a waiter” and “a police officer”.
“Your job?” Yuki asks Ken.
“I'm an engineer!”
