Four rules, one habit
Everything in this unit comes down to one habit: read the batchim as an unreleased stop, then let the next syllable decide what happens to it. Before a vowel it links (옷이 오시). Before a nasal it becomes a nasal (입니다 임니다). Next to ㅎ it fuses into an aspirated sound (좋다 조타). Before a plain stop it tenses the stop (학교 학꾜). And at the very end of a word it simply stops, as one of the seven finals.
What the checkpoint asks
You will be shown a written word and asked how it sounds, or shown a sound and asked which word it is. Nothing here needs grammar. If you hesitate, find the batchim first, then look at the very next letter: that letter is the whole answer.
| Next letter | What the batchim does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ㅇ | links forward | 음악, 옷이 |
| ㄴ ㅁ | becomes a nasal | 입니다, 한국말 |
| ㅎ | fuses into an aspirate | 축하, 입학 |
| ㄱ ㄷ ㅂ ㅅ ㅈ | tenses that letter | 학교, 식당 |
옷이 예뻐요The clothes are pretty.
학생입니다I am a student.
