Ш to Я: the last eight

Two letters with no sound of their own

The last eight are ш щ ъ ы ь э ю я, and two of them are unlike anything in a Latin alphabet: Ъ and Ь make no sound at all. The soft sign Ь tells you the consonant before it is said with the tongue raised, and that alone can change the word: мат and мать are two different words.

Three posts on one floor. Count them: three, not four.

The same letter with a tail on the right foot – exactly the difference between Ц and П.

A post with one belly at the bottom, and no bar at the top. It is silent.

The Latin R turned back to front. It is a whole syllable: ya.
