Three things travel together from here on. Это names what you see and needs no verb; every noun carries a gender that its last letter announces; and every word of possession copies that gender. Nothing in this unit depends on who is speaking.

The three genders in one table
The ending of the dictionary form decides, and the pronoun and the possessive follow it without arguing. Only two groups break the rule: nouns in -а / -я that name men (папа, дядя), which are masculine, and the small neuter group in -мя (время, имя).

Whose?
Чей / чья / чьё / чьи ask and мой / твой / наш / ваш answer, and both of them agree with the thing, never with the owner. That is why моя машина is said by a man just as readily as by a woman.
Чья это газета? Это моя газета.Whose newspaper is this? It is my newspaper.
Это не мой журнал. Он ваш.This is not my magazine. It is yours.
