Ten pronouns, one pattern
| Person | One | Several |
|---|---|---|
| I / we | أَنَا | نَحْنُ |
| you, a man / men | أَنْتَ | أَنْتُمْ |
| you, a woman / women | أَنْتِ | أَنْتُنَّ |
| he / they | هُوَ | هُمْ |
| she / they, women | هِيَ | هُنَّ |
A sentence is subject + predicate with no verb: هِيَ طَبِيبَةٌ, نَحْنُ طُلَّابٌ. The predicate agrees with the subject – ة for a woman, the plural for several. A question with هَلْ keeps the sentence as it is; مَنْ, مَا and أَيْنَ go first.
هَلْ أَنْتِ مُهَنْدِسَةٌ؟ لَا، أَنَا صَحَفِيَّةٌ.Are you an engineer? (to a woman) – No, I am a journalist.
مَنْ هُمْ؟ هُمْ طُلَّابٌ مِنْ تُونِسَ.Who are they? – They are students from Tunisia.
