Six letters, and one that is often silent
The next six are g h i j k l. Two of them need a warning. G has two sounds: hard in girl, soft in page. H is breathed out at the start of hat, but it says nothing at all in hour. The rest behave: i, j, k and l sound the way they look.
Big G is a C with a shelf added inside. Big H is two posts and a bar. Small g drops a tail below the line; small h is a post with one arch.
Big I is one line. Small i is a short line with a dot above it, and small j is the same with a tail below.
K is a post with two arms meeting it in the middle. L is a post with a foot; the small l is only the post.
| Letter | Its name | A word with it |
|---|---|---|
| Gg | gee | girl |
| Hh | aitch | hat |
| Ii | eye | ice |
| Jj | jay | jam |
| Kk | kay | key |
| Ll | el | leg |
Look at i and j side by side. They are drawn the same way, and the only difference is the tail: the j goes below the line, the i stops on it. The dot belongs to both, and it is written LAST – after the body of the letter, never before it.
