Present simple: negatives and questions
We use the present simple to talk about habits and regular activities. To make a negative with I / you / we / they, use don't + base verb. To make a yes/no question, use Do + subject + base verb.
| Type | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative | I/You/We/They + verb | I read at night. |
| Negative | I/You/We/They + don't + verb | I don't read at night. |
| Question | Do + I/you/we/they + verb? | Do you read at night? |
Negative sentences with don't
Don't means do not. After don't, use the base verb: don't watch, don't play, don't read. We do not add -s or -ing here.
We don't watch TV in the morning.
They don't play games at night.
Yes/no questions with do
For questions, put do before the subject: Do you... ?, Do they... ? Use the base verb after the subject. These questions ask for yes or no.
Do you listen to music every day?
Do they read at night?
