How often?
We use adverbs of frequency to say how often something happens. In this lesson, you learn always, usually, often, sometimes, and never. They help you talk about habits and routines.
| Adverb | Meaning |
|---|---|
| always | 100% of the time |
| usually | most of the time |
| often | many times |
| sometimes | some times |
| never | 0% of the time |
Position with main verbs
With most verbs, the adverb goes before the main verb. This is very common in present simple sentences. Look at the word order carefully.
She always drinks tea in the morning.
He often plays football after school.
Position with be
With the verb be, the adverb goes after be. So we say is always, are usually, am never, not always is.
| With main verb | With be |
|---|---|
| She usually walks to work. | She is usually early. |
| He never watches TV at night. | He is never late. |
| I sometimes listen to music. | I am sometimes tired. |
