Checkpoint: He Works, She Works

1. He / She / It in the present simple

With he, she, and it, the verb usually changes in the present simple. We add -s: work → works, live → lives. This is how we talk about another person's habits and routines.

SubjectVerbExample
I / You / We / TheyworkThey work every day.
He / She / ItworksShe works every day.

He drinks coffee in the morning.

2. Spelling changes: -s, -es, -ies

Some verbs have special spelling in the third person. Most verbs take -s, verbs like go, watch, wash often take -es, and verbs ending in consonant + y change to -ies: study → studies. Learn the full form as one word.

3. How often? Adverbs of frequency

Adverbs of frequency tell us how often something happens: always, usually, often, sometimes, never. They usually go before the main verb: He usually walks to work. With be, they go after be: She is always busy.

She often studies at night.

He is never late.

4. Questions and negatives with does / doesn't

For he, she, it questions, use does + base verb. For negatives, use doesn't + base verb. The main verb does not take -s after does or doesn't.

Positivehe/she/it + verb-sShe likes tea.
QuestionDoes + he/she/it + base verb?Does she like tea?
