1. He / She / It in the present simple
With he, she, and it, the verb usually changes in the present simple. We add -s: work → works, live → lives. This is how we talk about another person's habits and routines.
| Subject | Verb | Example |
|---|---|---|
| I / You / We / They | work | They work every day. |
| He / She / It | works | She works every day. |
He drinks coffee in the morning.
2. Spelling changes: -s, -es, -ies
Some verbs have special spelling in the third person. Most verbs take -s, verbs like go, watch, wash often take -es, and verbs ending in consonant + y change to -ies: study → studies. Learn the full form as one word.
| Base verb | He/She/It form |
|---|---|
| work | works |
| go | goes |
| watch | watches |
| study | studies |
3. How often? Adverbs of frequency
Adverbs of frequency tell us how often something happens: always, usually, often, sometimes, never. They usually go before the main verb: He usually walks to work. With be, they go after be: She is always busy.
She often studies at night.
He is never late.
4. Questions and negatives with does / doesn't
For he, she, it questions, use does + base verb. For negatives, use doesn't + base verb. The main verb does not take -s after does or doesn't.
| Type | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Positive | he/she/it + verb-s | She likes tea. |
| Question | Does + he/she/it + base verb? | Does she like tea? |
| Negative | he/she/it + doesn't + base verb | She doesn't like tea. |
Does he usually go by bus?
