One verb, three sentences
있어요 and 없어요 built three sentence types in this unit. Possession: 저는 동생이 있어요. Existence somewhere: 공원에 나무가 있어요. Location of a known thing: 지갑은 가방 안에 있어요. The pieces are always the same – the owner or topic with 은/는, the place with 에 (and a position noun if needed), the thing with 이/가 – and the verb closes the sentence.
The particles so far
You now own five particles. 은/는 for the topic. 이/가 for the subject and the thing that exists. 에 for the place where something is. 의 for the owner. 도 for also, which replaces 은/는 or 이/가 and stacks after 에. Every one of them is glued to the word before it with no space, and only 은/는 and 이/가 change their shape after a consonant.
| Particle | Job | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 은/는 | topic | 저는 |
| 이/가 | subject, the thing that exists | 시간이 |
| 에 | place of being | 집에 |
| 의 | owner | 친구의 |
| 도 | also | 우유도 |
