Many rooms are named with an iḍāfa: غُرْفَةُ النَّوْمِ – “the room of sleep”, غُرْفَةُ الْجُلُوسِ – “the room of sitting”. A house is بَيْت, a flat شَقَّة; a flat is on a floor, a طَابِق: فِي الطَّابِقِ الثَّالِثِ – on the third floor. You go up by the دَرَج (stairs) or the مِصْعَد (lift).
شَقَّتُنَا فِي الطَّابِقِ الْخَامِسِ، وَالْمِصْعَدُ قَدِيمٌ.Our flat is on the fifth floor, and the lift is old.
How many rooms? كَمْ غُرْفَةً فِي الشَّقَّةِ؟ The answers are set forms for now: غُرْفَتَانِ – two rooms, ثَلَاثُ غُرَفٍ – three rooms. The real rules for counting come later.
فِي بَيْتِ جَدِّي ثَلَاثُ غُرَفٍ وَحَدِيقَةٌ كَبِيرَةٌ.My grandfather’s house has three rooms and a big garden.
