What I like doing
You already know أُحِبُّ – I like. A hobby comes right after it as a noun with the article: أُحِبُّ الْقِرَاءَةَ – I like reading, literally “I like the reading”. The noun is the object, so it ends in -a.
| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| قِرَاءَة | reading |
| سِبَاحَة | swimming |
| رَسْم | drawing, painting |
| طَبْخ | cooking |
| مُوسِيقَى | music |
| رِيَاضَة | sport |
أُحِبُّ السِّبَاحَةَ وَالرَّسْمَ.I like swimming and drawing.
With a verb, Arabic puts أَنْ between the two: أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَقْرَأَ – I like to read. Learn it as a set form: أَنْ, then the “I” form of the verb ending in -a. لَا أُحِبُّ – I don’t like.
أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَقْرَأَ فِي وَقْتِ الْفَرَاغِ، وَلَا أُحِبُّ الرَّقْصَ.I like to read in my free time, and I don’t like dancing.
To ask: مَاذَا تَفْعَلُ فِي وَقْتِ الْفَرَاغِ؟ – what do you do in your free time? Or shorter: مَا هِوَايَتُكَ؟ – what is your hobby? The answer: هِوَايَتِي + the hobby with the article.
مَا هِوَايَتُكَ؟ – هِوَايَتِي الرَّسْمُ.What is your hobby? – My hobby is drawing.
