My, your, his, her, our, their
Possessive adjectives show who something belongs to. We use them before a noun: my bag, your phone, her keys. They answer the question: Whose is it?
| Subject | Possessive adjective | Example |
|---|---|---|
| I | my | my bag |
| you | your | your phone |
| he | his | his wallet |
| she | her | her keys |
| we | our | our books |
| they | their | their coats |
This is my backpack.
Those are their umbrellas.
his or her?
Use his for a man or boy, and her for a woman or girl. The thing can be anything: his pen, her jacket. The possessive adjective changes with the person, not with the thing.
Tom has his ticket.
Emma has her notebook.
Anna's phone: possessive 's
We can also show possession with a name + 's. This means the thing belongs to that person: Anna's phone, David's keys. This form is very common with people and family names.
| Person | Thing | Phrase |
|---|---|---|
| Anna | phone | Anna's phone |
| David | wallet | David's wallet |
| my sister | bag | my sister's bag |
| our teacher | book | our teacher's book |
This is Anna's phone.
That is my brother's jacket.
Questions with Whose...?
Use Whose... ? to ask about possession. With a singular thing, say Whose book is this? With plural things, say Whose keys are those?
Whose pen is this? It's my pen.
Whose bags are those? They're our bags.
