Numbers 0–100
In this lesson, you learn cardinal numbers from 0 to 100. We use them to say age, count things, and give phone numbers. You also learn the important difference between -teen numbers and -ty numbers.
| 0–12 | 13–19 | 20–100 |
|---|---|---|
| zero, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve | thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen | twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety, one hundred |
After 20, we usually make numbers with tens + ones. For example, 21 is twenty-one and 47 is forty-seven. In speech, say both parts clearly.
I have twenty-three books.
Teen and ty
-teen numbers are 13–19, like thirteen and sixteen. -ty numbers are 20, 30, 40, 50, and so on, like twenty and sixty. This difference is very important because thirteen and thirty sound similar.
| -teen | -ty |
|---|---|
| thirteen | thirty |
| fourteen | forty |
| fifteen | fifty |
| sixteen | sixty |
| seventeen | seventy |
| eighteen | eighty |
| nineteen | ninety |
Age and phone numbers
We use numbers to talk about age: I'm twenty-five years old or simply I'm twenty-five. For phone numbers, we usually say the numbers one by one: 5-8-2 becomes five eight two.
I'm twenty-five years old.
My phone number is six one four, eight two zero, nine three one five.
How many...?
Use How many ... ? to ask about a number of things. The noun is plural: How many books? or How many students? The answer uses a number: Ten or I have ten books.
