Was gibt es in der Stadt?: es gibt + accusative
es gibt means “there is” and “there are” – one form for one thing and for many: Hier gibt es einen Park, Hier gibt es zwei Kinos. What exists is the object of geben, so it stands in the accusative, the case you know from the food unit. Only masculine nouns change: der Park → einen Park, der Bahnhof → keinen Bahnhof. Feminine and neuter stay as they are: eine Apotheke, ein Museum, keine Post. Learn every place with its article – der Bahnhof, die Post, das Kino – and the accusative follows by itself.
| Place | Meaning | Es gibt … (there is …) |
|---|---|---|
| der Bahnhof | station | einen Bahnhof |
| der Park | park | einen Park |
| die Post | post office | eine Post |
| die Apotheke | pharmacy | eine Apotheke |
| die Kirche | church | eine Kirche |
| das Kino | cinema | ein Kino |
| das Rathaus | town hall | ein Rathaus |
Hier gibt es einen Park und zwei Kinos. There is a park and two cinemas here.
Wo ist …? Gibt es hier …?: asking for a place
Two questions, two situations. When you know the place exists and want its location, ask Wo ist + der/die/das (the nominative, because the place is the subject of ist): Wo ist der Bahnhof? When you don’t know whether there is one at all, ask Gibt es hier + ein/eine/einen: Gibt es hier eine Apotheke? Open politely with Entschuldigung. Useful answers: Ja, in der Nähe (yes, nearby), Nein, hier gibt es keine Apotheke. The plural of most places ends in -e, -en or -s: die Kirche → die Kirchen, der Park → die Parks, das Kino → die Kinos.
Gibt es hier in der Nähe einen Supermarkt? Is there a supermarket near here?
Wo ist das Kino?Where is the cinema?
