Mit dem Bus, mit der U-Bahn: mit + dative
You travel mit (by, with) a vehicle, and mit always takes the dative – the third case of German. The dative articles are easy to learn as a set: der → dem, das → dem, die → der, and in the plural die → den, with an extra -n on the noun. So: mit dem Bus, mit dem Fahrrad, mit der U-Bahn, mit den Kindern. The indefinite article follows: mit einem Freund, mit einer Freundin. The verb for vehicles is fahren; on foot you gehen – zu Fuß, without any article.
| Nominative | Dative | Example |
|---|---|---|
| der Bus | dem Bus | mit dem Bus |
| das Fahrrad | dem Fahrrad | mit dem Fahrrad |
| die U-Bahn | der U-Bahn | mit der U-Bahn |
| die Kinder | den Kindern | mit den Kindern |

| eine Freundin | einer Freundin | mit einer Freundin |

Zum Bahnhof, zur Post: zu + dative
zu (to) shows where you are going – a place in town or a person – and it also takes the dative. zu melts together with the article: zu dem → zum (zum Bahnhof, zum Kino, zum Arzt), zu der → zur (zur Post, zur Apotheke, zur Ärztin). The question is Wie komme ich zum …? – How do I get to …? Two exceptions: cities and countries without an article take nach (nach Berlin, nach Österreich), and home is nach Hause.
