Three questions before every noun
To choose the article, ask three things. Is the noun masculine or feminine? How does it begin – with a consonant, with s + consonant or z, or with a vowel? Is it one thing or more than one? The answers lead to one of the seven definite articles (il, lo, l', la, i, gli, le) or one of the indefinite ones (un, uno, una, un'). The adjective then takes the ending of the noun.
| The noun | the (one) | the (more) | a, an |
|---|---|---|---|
| masculine, consonant | il libro | i libri | un libro |
| masculine, s + consonant, z | lo zaino | gli zaini | uno zaino |
| masculine, vowel | l'amico | gli amici | un amico |
| feminine, consonant | la casa | le case | una casa |
| feminine, vowel | l'amica | le amiche | un'amica |
The adjective follows the noun
Nouns and adjectives make the plural the same way: -o → -i, -a → -e, -e → -i. Nouns ending in an accented vowel or a consonant (il caffè, la città, il bar, il film) do not change. Most adjectives come after the noun (una casa piccola); a few short ones also go before it (un bel libro, una grande città).
