Un, uno, una, un': the indefinite article and adjectives

Un, uno, una, un': “a” and “an”

The indefinite article follows the same logic as the definite one. Masculine nouns take un (un libro, un ragazzo) and uno where the definite article would be lo: uno studente, uno zaino, uno zio. Feminine nouns take una (una casa, una ragazza), and before a vowel un' with an apostrophe: un'amica. A masculine noun before a vowel has un without an apostrophe: un amico. So the apostrophe shows you the gender: un amico is a man, un'amica a woman.

Definite articleIndefinite articleExample
ilunun ragazzo
lounouno studente
l' (masculine)unun amico
launauna ragazza
l' (feminine)un' (with apostrophe)un'amica

Una casa piccola: the adjective after the noun

Most adjectives come after the noun and agree with it in gender and number, with the same endings you know from essere: un libro nuovo, una casa piccola, due case piccole, amici nuovi. Adjectives in -e have one form for both genders: un libro interessante, una città interessante, and -i in the plural: libri interessanti.

OneMore than one
una casa piccoladue case piccole
un amico nuovodue amici nuovi
un libro interessantedue libri interessanti
una città grandedue città grandi

Un bel ragazzo, una brava cuoca: adjectives before the noun

A few short, very common adjectives often go before the noun: bello, brutto, grande, piccolo, nuovo, vecchio and bravo (good at something): una brava cuoca – a good cook, una grande città. Before a noun, bello shortens like an article: un bel ragazzo, un bel libro. Sometimes the place changes the meaning: un vecchio amico is a friend of many years, un amico vecchio an elderly friend. Questo (this) also agrees: questo libro, questa casa, questi libri, queste case.

Ho un amico nuovo e un'amica di Roma.I have a new friend and a friend (a woman) from Rome.

Questo libro è interessante, ma questa penna è vecchia. This book is interesting, but this pen is old.
