Four models for every regular verb
Some endings never change: io always ends in -o, tu in -i, noi in -iamo. The differences are in three places: lui and lei (-a for -are verbs, -e for the others), voi (-ate, -ete or -ite, like the infinitive) and loro (-ano for -are verbs, -ono for the others). Verbs like capire add -isc- everywhere except noi and voi.
| Pronoun | -are: parlare | -ere: prendere | -ire: dormire | -ire with -isc-: capire |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| io | parlo | prendo | dormo | capisco |
| tu | parli | prendi | dormi | capisci |
| lui, lei, Lei | parla | prende | dorme | capisce |
| noi | parliamo | prendiamo | dormiamo | capiamo |
| voi | parlate | prendete | dormite | capite |
| loro | parlano | prendono | dormono | capiscono |
Spelling and sound: h, one i, soft c and g
Three spelling habits come back again and again. -care and -gare verbs write an h before i to stay hard: cerchi, paghiamo. -iare verbs never write two i: studi, mangiamo. -ere verbs never change their spelling, only their sound: leggo is hard, leggi is soft.
| Infinitive | io form | tu form | noi form |
|---|---|---|---|
| cercare | cerco | cerchi | cerchiamo |
| pagare | pago | paghi | paghiamo |
| studiare | studio | studi | studiamo |
| leggere | leggo | leggi | leggiamo |
Questions start with the question word, and a named subject follows the verb: Dove lavora Marco? Che cosa legge Sara? Remember perché for both “why?” and “because”, and qual è with no apostrophe.
– Quando partite? – Partiamo domani, ma Luca parte oggi.– When are you (all) leaving? – We’re leaving tomorrow, but Luca is leaving today.
