Every noun is masculine or feminine
Portuguese nouns are masculine or feminine, and the article shows which. “The” is o (masculine) or a (feminine), in the plural os / as. “A, an” is um / uma, and “some” is uns / umas: o livro, um livro; a casa, uma casa.
| Gender | “the” | “a, an / some” |
|---|---|---|
| masculine singular | o livro | um livro |
| feminine singular | a casa | uma casa |
| masculine plural | os livros | uns livros |
| feminine plural | as casas | umas casas |
Endings that help – and the exceptions
Most nouns in -o are masculine (o carro), most in -a feminine (a mesa). -dade and -ção are always feminine: a cidade, a lição. Learn the exceptions with their article: o dia (day), o mapa (map), o problema (problem) are masculine; a mão (hand) and a foto (photo) are feminine.
