Where it starts
European Portuguese uses the same 26 letters and the same accents (á, â, ã, ç, é, ê, ó, ô, õ) as Brazil and sounds quite different: unstressed vowels almost vanish, and an s at the end of a syllable is a sh. A0 teaches the letters, the accents and those sounds with audio and stroke order; A1 opens with greetings and the first real dialogues.
With your partner
If your partner is from Portugal, the live translator carries your conversations while you learn: you speak your language, they hear European Portuguese, and the words you needed most land in your vocabulary trainer. If you both learn it, you share one course and race each other in the games.

Questions about this course
- How long does it take to reach B1 in European Portuguese?
- The A1 and A2 levels of the course are about a hundred lessons – three to four months at one a day, with the translator adding real words every day. B1 is the following stage; the verbs take time, following fast speech that swallows its vowels takes longer, and how fast it goes depends mostly on how much Portuguese you hear around you.
- How is it different from the Brazilian course?
- It teaches the Portuguese of Portugal: the pronunciation, tu as the everyday “you”, o meu, the pronoun after the verb (chamo-me) and everyday words like autocarro and pequeno-almoço. The spelling follows the same agreement; everything else is a course of its own, and LinguaPair has a separate one for Brazilian Portuguese.
- Can I learn European Portuguese from an interface in another language?
- Yes. The app speaks all twelve languages; the lesson explanations, the word meanings and the exercise instructions come in yours, and only the material is in European Portuguese.
