Linguader Vater, die Mutter: the family words
With people, the article follows the person: men and boys are der (der Bruder, der Onkel), women and girls are die (die Schwester, die Tante). At home children say Mama and Papa, Oma and Opa; the neutral words are die Mutter, der Vater and die Großeltern. German has one word each for “brother” and “sister” – older or younger does not matter: mein großer Bruder, meine kleine Schwester.

die Eltern, die Geschwister: words that are always plural
die Eltern (parents) and die Großeltern (grandparents) are plural words, so the verb is plural too: Die Eltern wohnen in Bonn. die Geschwister is the everyday word for brothers and sisters together – where English asks “Do you have any brothers or sisters?”, German simply asks Hast du auch Geschwister?. Someone without any is an Einzelkind (only child). Many plurals change the vowel: Brüder, Mütter, Töchter, Söhne – so learn the plural with the word.
Lara hat keine Geschwister, sie ist Einzelkind.Lara has no brothers or sisters; she is an only child.
Ich habe zwei Brüder: haben with family
Family is counted with haben: ich habe, du hast, er/sie hat, wir haben. With two or more you just use the plural: Ich habe zwei Brüder. With one, the article depends on the gender: eine Schwester, ein Kind – and for a masculine word ein becomes einen after haben: Ich habe einen Bruder. (Why? The full rule comes in the food unit.) None at all is kein: keine Geschwister, keine Kinder.
