La famiglia: the words you know

Family words come in pairs (il nonno – la nonna, lo zio – la zia, il marito – la moglie). The masculine plural covers men and women: i fratelli, i figli, i nonni, gli zii. I genitori are father and mother; i parenti are all your relatives. To talk about them, use avere: ho due cugini, non ho fratelli, sono figlio unico.

È alta, ha i capelli castani: describing

Essere + adjective: è alto, è timida, sono simpatici. Avere + article + noun: ha i capelli lunghi, ha gli occhi azzurri, ha la barba. The adjective agrees with what it describes: i capelli corti, le cugine simpatiche. And assomigliare a says who someone looks like: assomiglio a mia madre.

La sorella di Pietro è alta, ha i capelli castani ed è molto allegra.Pietro’s sister is tall, has brown hair and is very cheerful.
