Com'è? – describing people

Com'è? – What is he like?

The question Com’è? asks what someone is like. Italian describes people with two verbs. Essere + adjective says what a person is: è alto, è magra, è simpatico. Avere + the article + a noun says what a person has: ha i capelli castani (brown hair), ha gli occhi azzurri (blue eyes), ha la barba, ha gli occhiali.

è altohe is tall
è bassohe is short
è magrohe is thin

– Com'è tuo fratello? – È alto e magro e ha la barba.– What’s your brother like? – He’s tall and thin and has a beard.

Adjectives agree with the person: alto, alta, alti, alte. For a woman you say Giulia è alta e bionda. Adjectives in -e have one form for him and her: gentile, giovane. For character: allegro (cheerful), timido (shy), generoso (generous), pigro (lazy), simpatico (nice) and its opposite antipatico. The hair colour also works as an adjective: è castano means he has brown hair.
