Your area of town is your حَيّ (ḥayy). The people next door are your جِيرَان (jīrān) – one of them is a جَار. To say where you live: أَسْكُنُ فِي حَيٍّ هَادِئٍ بِجَانِبِ السُّوقِ – I live in a quiet neighbourhood next to the market.
شَقَّتِي صَغِيرَةٌ، لَكِنَّهَا مُشْمِسَةٌ وَمُرِيحَةٌ.My flat is small, but it is sunny and comfortable.
Opposites help: قَدِيم – حَدِيث (old – modern), وَاسِع – ضَيِّق (spacious – cramped). What you see from the window is the مَنْظَر – the view: الْمَنْظَرُ مِنَ الشُّرْفَةِ جَمِيلٌ.
جِيرَانُنَا لَطِيفُونَ، وَالْحَيُّ نَظِيفٌ وَحَدِيثٌ.Our neighbours are nice, and the neighbourhood is clean and modern.
