1. There is / There are

Use there is for one thing and there are for two or more things. We use these forms to say what exists in a room, house, or place.

Meaning	Singular	Plural
positive	There is a sofa.	There are two chairs.
negative	There isn't a TV.	There aren't any pictures.
question	Is there a table?	Are there any books?

There is a lamp in the bedroom.

2. Furniture and things at home

Use home words like bed, sofa, table, chair, lamp, fridge, cooker, shower and mirror to describe rooms. You can say what is in a room with there is/are and what a person or home has with have got.

We have got a big fridge in the kitchen.

3. Prepositions of place

Use in, on, under, next to, behind, in front of, and between to say where things are. Ask about position with Where is ... ? or Where are ... ?

under	below	The shoes are under the bed.
next to	at the side of	The lamp is next to the sofa.
behind	at the back of	The bag is behind the door.
in front of	before it	The chair is in front of the desk.
between	in the middle of two things	The table is between the chairs.

The mirror is between the window and the door.

4. Quick review

To describe a home, combine these parts: use there is/are for what exists, home vocabulary for the room and objects, and prepositions for location. Example: There are two chairs next to the table.
