Portugal says o frigorífico (fridge) – Brazil has another word – and a máquina de lavar for the washing machine (or de lavar a loiça, the dishwasher).

de joins the article: da, do, das, dos. Things are placed with estar: As chaves estão em cima da mesa. Portugal says debaixo de (under) and à frente de (in front of).
O gato está debaixo da cama e os livros estão na estante.The cat is under the bed and the books are on the bookcase.
