European Portuguese keeps all three apart: este livro (this book, by me), esse livro (that book, by you), aquele livro (that book over there). They agree with the noun: esta casa, essas cadeiras, aquele prédio.
Isto, isso, aquilo
For a thing without its name, use the neutral forms: O que é isto? (What is this?) Isso é meu. (That’s mine.) Aquilo é o castelo. (That over there is the castle.)

aqui (here, by me), aí (there, by you), ali (over there), lá (far over there). cá is “here” with movement towards me: Vem cá! (Come here!)
Este candeeiro é novo, esse sofá é velho e aquela estante é da minha avó.This lamp is new, that sofa (by you) is old, and that bookcase over there is my grandmother’s.
