-er and -ir verbs: eat, open

The -er pattern

Take off -er and add -o, -es, -e, -emos, -em: como, comes, come, comemos, comem. Many everyday verbs follow it: beber, aprender, escrever, vender, correr, receber.

The -ir pattern

-ir verbs are the same as -er except for nós, which ends in -imos: abrimos, partimos, decidimos, dividimos.

Abrimos a loja às nove e vendemos pão e bolos. We open the shop at nine and sell bread and cakes.

Perceber and partir in Portugal

The everyday Portuguese verb for “to understand” is perceber: Percebes? (Do you understand?) Não percebo. (I don’t understand.) And partir means “to leave” and, very often in Portugal, “to break”: partir um copo.
