One system, three uses
The three roots 이, 그, 저 ran through the whole unit. With 것 they name things (이것, 그것, 저것; spoken 이거, 그거, 저거). Alone before a noun they point at it (이 책, 그 사람, 저 건물). With 기 they name places (여기, 거기, 저기), and with 쪽 they give directions (이쪽, 그쪽, 저쪽). The distance never changes its meaning: 이 is my side, 그 is your side or something already known, 저 is far from both.
The questions of the unit
Three questions came with the pointers. 이것이 뭐예요? for what a thing is. 이 우산은 누구 거예요? for whose it is, answered with owner plus 거 (제 거예요, 친구 거예요). 화장실이 어디예요? for where something is, answered with 여기예요, 저쪽이에요 or a place name. In all three the noun comes first with its particle and the question word comes last with 예요.
