Here, there and over there: 여기, 거기, 저기, 어디

The same three distances, for places

Places are pointed at with the same three roots plus : 여기 here, where I am, 거기 there, where you are, 저기 over there, away from both of us. They behave like nouns and take particles: 여기는 우리 학교예요, 저기가 시장이에요. The question word for a place is 어디, and the most useful sentence in this course so far is N이/가 어디예요?where is N? – answered with 여기예요, 저기예요 or a place name.

Giving a direction: 이쪽, 저쪽

When the answer is a direction rather than a spot, use side: 이쪽 this way, 저쪽 that way, 그쪽 your way. 화장실은 이쪽이에요, 정류장은 저쪽이에요 – said with an open hand, never a pointing finger, which is rude towards people. The first place words worth having are the ones you ask about on day one: 화장실, 정류장 bus stop, 역 station, 시장 market.
