Verbs in -er and -ir follow the same idea as -ar: drop the ending and add the person’s ending. The two groups are twins – they differ only with nós: comemos, but abrimos. Eu ends in -o (bebo, abro), ele/ela and a gente in -e (bebe, abre), eles/vocês in -em (bebem, abrem).
Na escola, a gente aprende inglês e escreve muito.At school we learn English and write a lot.
Everyday -er and -ir verbs
Group -er: beber (to drink), aprender (to learn), escrever (to write), vender (to sell), correr (to run), receber (to receive). Group -ir: abrir (to open), assistir (to watch), decidir (to decide), dividir (to share, to split), partir (to leave, a bit formal). Learn them with the eu form: bebo, aprendo, escrevo; abro, assisto, decido.
A padaria abre às seis e vende pão quentinho.The bakery opens at six and sells warm bread.
