LinguaNão goes before the verb
To make a sentence negative, put não right before the verb: Falo francês → Não falo francês. Ela trabalha hoje → Ela não trabalha hoje. A short “no” answer often has two: – Você come carne? – Não, não como. In relaxed Brazilian speech you also hear não at the end: Não sei não, or even Sei não – both mean “I don’t know”.
– Vocês moram no centro? – Não, não moramos.“Do you live in the centre?” “No, we don’t.”
Yes–no questions and short answers
A yes–no question is the same sentence with a rising voice: Você fala inglês. → Você fala inglês? Nothing moves. Brazilians usually answer with the verb, not with sim: – Você mora aqui? – Moro. – Vocês trabalham amanhã? – Trabalhamos. For “no”: – Não, não moro.
– Você gosta de futebol? – Gosto muito!“Do you like football?” “I love it!”

por que (two words) asks why; porque (one word) answers because: – Por que você estuda português? – Porque meu marido é brasileiro. At the very end of a question, por que takes an accent: Você não vem por quê? In speech the question word may also stay at the end: Você mora onde?
