Each meal has its verb: tomar o pequeno-almoço, almoçar, lanchar, jantar. Almoço à uma. Lancho às cinco. Janto às oito. “At lunch” is ao almoço.
What is on the plate
A Portuguese lunch often starts with a sopa, then o peixe or a carne with o arroz or as batatas and a salada, and ends with a fruta. Small restaurants have o prato do dia – a cheap dish of the day.
Ao almoço como uma sopa, peixe com batatas e, no fim, fruta.At lunch I have a soup, fish with potatoes and, at the end, fruit.
With or without the article
Food in general, or “some”: no article – Como peixe. (I eat fish.) Bebo água. A specific dish: with the article – O peixe está ótimo. (This fish is great.) A sopa é de legumes.
