LinguaOrdering a meal
O empregado (the waiter) brings a ementa (the menu) and asks O que vai ser? (What will it be?). You answer Para mim, o bacalhau. or Queria …. Then E para beber? – Uma água, se faz favor.
– O que vai ser? – Para mim, o prato do dia. E para beber, um sumo.– What will it be? – For me, the dish of the day. And to drink, a juice.
The couvert
Bread, butter, olives or cheese often arrive without being ordered: this is o couvert. If you eat it, you pay for it; if you don’t want it, just say Não, obrigado.
Paying
Ask for A conta, se faz favor. or, more politely, Podia trazer a conta? Then Posso pagar com cartão? – many places also take MB Way (a Portuguese phone payment) or dinheiro (cash). A gorjeta (tip) is small: a few coins.
