Checkpoint: Daily Life and Separable Verbs

What you can do now

You can describe your day from getting up to going to bed, make plans with other people, and say how often you do things. The key is the sentence bracket: the conjugated verb part stands in position 2, the separable prefix stands at the end, and time, frequency and objects go in between. The table shows the same pattern in a statement, a sentence that starts with a time, a question and a habit.

First placePosition 2 (verb)MiddleEnd (prefix)
Ichsteheum sieben Uhrauf.
Morgenrufeich meine Omaan.
Wannkommstduzurück?
Samstagskaufeich meistensein.

Morgen rufe ich meine Oma an.Tomorrow I’m calling my grandma.

Separable or not?

Listen for the stress. A stressed prefix – an, auf, aus, ein, mit, ab, zurück, fern – leaves the verb and goes to the end. The unstressed prefixes be-, ver- and er- never leave: ich besuche, ich verstehe, ich erzähle. frühstücken looks like a compound but is one ordinary verb, and in schlafen gehen it is gehen that changes.
