Six modal verbs at a glance

er / sie / es / mankannmusswillmöchtedarfsoll
wirkönnenmüssenwollenmöchtendürfensollen
ihrkönntmüsstwolltmöchtetdürftsollt
sie / Siekönnenmüssenwollenmöchtendürfensollen

Three rules cover the whole table. ich and er/sie/es always have the same form: ich kann – er kann, ich soll – sie soll (only möchten adds an -e: ich möchte – er möchte). Four modals change their vowel in the singular – können → kann, müssen → muss, wollen → will, dürfen → darf. The plural is regular: wir können, ihr könnt, sie können.

ModalWhat it expressesExample
könnenability, possibilityIch kann gut kochen.
müssennecessityWir müssen jetzt gehen.
wollena firm planSie will ein Auto kaufen.
möchtena polite wishIch möchte ein Glas Wasser.
dürfenpermissionDarf ich kurz telefonieren?
sollensomeone else’s wishDu sollst die Chefin anrufen.

The bracket in every kind of sentence

The modal takes the ending and the position of the verb – second in a statement or after a question word, first in a yes–no question. The infinitive always closes the sentence, unchanged: Heute kann ich nicht kommen. Musst du morgen arbeiten? A separable verb stays in one piece at the end: Ich muss früh aufstehen. When the infinitive is obvious, it can disappear: Ich kann Deutsch. Ich darf nicht.

Am Montag kann ich nicht kommen, ich muss arbeiten.I can’t come on Monday, I have to work.
