LinguaDer Arzt sagt, ich soll …: what someone else wants
sollen is a duty that comes from someone else – a doctor, a boss, a rule, your parents. With müssen the pressure comes from the situation (Ich muss um acht da sein, the train leaves); with sollen a person has told you: Der Arzt sagt, ich soll mehr schlafen. After sagt, comes a comma and a normal sentence with the modal in second place. As a question, Soll ich …? offers help or asks what the other person wants: Soll ich das Fenster zumachen? – Shall I close the window? The singular has no vowel change, and again no ending with ich and er: ich soll, er soll.

nicht müssen or nicht dürfen?: the big trap
English speakers fall into this one again and again. nicht müssen means “don’t have to”: it is not necessary, but you may. nicht dürfen means “must not”: it is forbidden. So German Du musst nicht kommen is friendly (you needn’t come), while Du darfst nicht kommen is a ban. nicht brauchen zu + infinitive means the same as nicht müssen and is very common in speech: Du brauchst nicht zu warten – you don’t need to wait.
