Checkpoint: The City and Directions

What you can do now

You can now find your way around a German-speaking town. You ask whether a place exists with Gibt es hier einen/eine/ein …? (accusative) and where it is with Wo ist der/die/das …? (nominative). You travel mit dem Bus, mit der U-Bahn and go zum Bahnhof, zur Post – mit and zu always take the dative – or nach Berlin and nach Hause. And you give directions with the formal imperative: Gehen Sie geradeaus, biegen Sie an der Ampel links ab.

Wo? and wohin?: in against zu

German asks two different questions. Wo? (where?) wants a place, and in + dative answers it: Ich bin im Park (in dem), Sie arbeitet in der Apotheke. Wohin? (where to?) wants a direction, and zu + dative answers it: Ich gehe zum Park. For going into a building you will also hear ins Kino (in das) – the full rule for in with two cases comes in the next unit.

Ich warte im Café an der Ecke.I’ll wait in the café on the corner.

Nehmen Sie die U-Bahn bis zum Rathaus.Take the underground as far as the town hall.
