Der Weg: asking and giving directions

Gehen Sie geradeaus!: the formal imperative

Directions to a stranger use the formal imperative: take the Sie form of the verb, put it first, and keep Sie after it: Gehen Sie geradeaus! Nehmen Sie die zweite Straße links! It looks like a yes–no question, but the voice goes down and the sentence ends with an exclamation mark or a full stop. A separable verb sends its prefix to the end, as always: abbiegen → Biegen Sie an der Ampel rechts ab. The streets are counted with ordinal numbers: die erste, die zweite, die dritte Straße links or rechts.

Gehen Sie hier geradeaus und dann links.Go straight on here and then left.

An der Ampel, bis zur Kreuzung: landmarks

Landmarks come with prepositions that take the dative, like mit and zu. an says where something happens: an der Ampel (at the traffic lights), an der Kreuzung, an der Ecke. bis zu says how far: bis zur Kreuzung, bis zum Platz. gegenüber means opposite: Die Post ist gegenüber dem Bahnhof – in everyday speech also gegenüber vom Bahnhof. And neben means next to: neben der Bank. You will meet an and neben again in the next unit, in the flat.

Biegen Sie an der Ampel rechts ab.Turn right at the traffic lights.

To ask, open with Entschuldigung and use Wie komme ich zum/zur …? or Wo ist hier …? Then check the distance: Ist das weit? – Nein, das ist ganz nah, zu Fuß fünf Minuten. Or: Ja, das ist ziemlich weit. Nehmen Sie lieber den Bus. Say thank you with Vielen Dank! – and if you don’t know the way yourself: Tut mir leid, ich bin nicht von hier.

Das Museum ist ganz nah, zu Fuß fünf Minuten. The museum is very close, five minutes on foot.
