Phrases come in pairs
Almost every phrase in this unit has a partner: a greeting and its return, a thanks and the wave that dismisses it, an apology and the reassurance, a request and the answer. If you know the second half, you never stand silent after the first.
Formal or friendly
The unit also planted the first seed of speech levels. Endings in -습니다 (감사합니다, 죄송합니다, 반갑습니다) are formal and safe everywhere. Endings in -요 (미안해요, 괜찮아요, 잘 가요) are polite but warmer, for people you deal with often. The bare forms 안녕, 고마워, 미안해 are for close friends and children only, and this course will not ask you to produce them until A2.
