Time, days and dates

Hours in one system, minutes in the other

Telling the time uses both number systems in one breath. The hour takes the native number with : 한 시, 두 시, 세 시, 네 시, 다섯 시, 열두 시. The minutes take the Sino-Korean number with : 오 분, 십 분, 이십오 분. So 3:20 is 세 시 이십 분, and half past is : 두 시 반. Morning and afternoon go in front: 오전 아홉 시, 오후 세 시. The question is 몇 시예요?

Days, months and the date

The days of the week end in 요일: 월요일 Monday, 화요일 Tuesday, 수요일 Wednesday, 목요일 Thursday, 금요일 Friday, 토요일 Saturday, 일요일 Sunday. Months are the Sino-Korean number plus : 일월 January, 이월 February, up to 십이월 – with two irregular forms, 유월 for June and 시월 for October. The date is the Sino-Korean number plus : 삼 일 the 3rd, 이십 일 the 20th. Korean writes the date from large to small – year, month, day – so 6월 3일 is 유월 삼 일. The questions are 무슨 요일이에요? and 며칠이에요?
