Two questions that buy almost everything
A shop needs one question about price and one about stock, and Russian gives you both in three words each. Сколько стоит asks the price of one thing and сколько стоят the price of several; У вас есть asks whether the shop has the thing at all, and the thing after it stays in its dictionary form.
| Question | What it asks |
|---|---|
| Сколько стоит хлеб? | the price of one thing |
| Сколько стоят фрукты? | the price of several things |
| У вас есть рыба? | whether the shop has it at all |
| Где касса? | where the paying happens |
How much of it: килограмм, литр, бутылка
Once you name a quantity, the product behind it changes its ending. This is not a new rule: it is the same ending you already use after нет, and it means 'of' – a kilo of sugar, a litre of milk. Masculine and neuter words take -а, and feminine words in -а move to -ы.
| Dictionary form | In the quantity phrase |
|---|---|
| сахар | килограмм сахара |
| мясо | килограмм мяса |
| рыба | килограмм рыбы |
| молоко | литр молока |
| вода | бутылка воды |
| продукты | пакет продуктов |
Getting through the shop
The word продукты covers everything edible and is also what a grocer's is called. A скидка is a price cut, which you will see written on a shelf far more often than you hear it said. And every shop ends the same way: at the касса, where you pay and where the verb купить finally comes true.
