LinguaThe first ten numbers
Every Vietnamese number from 0 to 10 is a single syllable with a fixed tone. The tone is not decoration: bảy with the hỏi tone is 7, while bay with no tone mark is a different word altogether. Learn each number together with its tone mark and people will understand you the first time. To count a range out loud, put từ in front of the first number and đến in front of the last one: đếm từ một đến mười.

không is 0 and also 'no'
You have already met không in Anh có khỏe không? – there it turns the phrase into a question. The very same word is the number zero. The word itself never changes; its place in the sentence tells you which one it is. A number stands where a number belongs, and the question không stands at the very end.

Two ways to ask 'how many': mấy and bao nhiêu
mấy asks for a small number – roughly under ten, or a number out of a short range the listener can guess: a small child's age, a floor, a house number. bao nhiêu asks for any amount at all, and it is the one you use when you have no idea how big the answer will be: a price, a phone number, a grown-up's age. Both stand right in front of the counted word, exactly where the number itself would go.
