“My” is an ending
Arabic has no separate word for “my, your, his”: a short ending is added to the noun. You already know اِسْمِي and اسْمُكَ. Here is the whole set on كِتَاب:
| Whose | Word |
|---|---|
| my | كِتَابِي |
| your (a man) | كِتَابُكَ |
| your (a woman) | كِتَابُكِ |
| his | كِتَابُهُ |
| her | كِتَابُهَا |
| our | كِتَابُنَا |
| your (several) | كِتَابُكُمْ |
| their | كِتَابُهُمْ |
Before a suffix ة turns into ت: سَيَّارَة → سَيَّارَتِي (my car), غُرْفَة → غُرْفَتُهَا (her room). A noun with a suffix is definite, so its adjective takes الـ: بَيْتِي الْجَدِيدُ – “my new house”.
هٰذَا هَاتِفِي الْجَدِيدُ.This is my new phone.
مَا عُنْوَانُكَ؟What is your address? (to a man)
