Checkpoint: the city, aller and directions

Aller and prendre side by side

This unit gave you two irregular verbs, and they are the two you will use most in a city. Aller moves you: je vais, tu vas, il va, nous allons, vous allez, ils vont – three “va” sounds, then a new stem. Prendre takes the bus, the ticket, the first street: je prends, tu prends, il prend, nous prenons, vous prenez, ils prennent – three “pran” sounds, then pren- and the double n of prennent. Both keep the same shape in the plural: -ons, -ez, and a third form that changes stem. Remember the bonus of aller: put an infinitive after it and you have the near future – nous allons prendre le train (we are going to take the train).

À and de before the article: au, du, aux, des

Two prepositions, one mechanism. À says where you go or where you are: je vais au marché, elle est à la gare, pour aller à l’hôtel ?, il est aux toilettes. De completes the prepositions of place: à côté du marché, en face de la gare, près de l’hôtel, à droite des toilettes. In both cases only le and les fuse – au / du, aux / des – while la and l’ stay untouched. So the question to ask before every place is always the same: which article does this noun carry? Le cinéma gives au cinéma and du cinéma; la banque gives à la banque and de la banque; l’église gives à l’église and de l’église.

Where and how: the map in words

Three questions cover the whole city. Où est… ? / Où sont… ? asks for a position, and the answer is être + a preposition: devant, derrière, dans, sur, sous, entre take the place directly; à côté de, en face de, près de, loin de, à gauche de, à droite de take de and its contractions. Pour aller à… ? asks for a route, and the answer is a chain of orders: tournez à gauche, continuez tout droit, prenez la première rue à droite, c’est à deux minutes. The third question, tu vas comment ? (how do you get there?), gets en or à: en bus, en métro, en train, en voiture, but à pied, à vélo. Put the three together and you can find, describe and reach any place in town.
